A
census conducted Office for National Statistics (ONS) the UK in 2011
and declared one of ten people under the age of 25 years in the UK are
Muslims, while Christians has decreased. Population
explosion among Muslims and Christians among demographic aging could
mean that Islam will become the dominant religion in the UK in the next
ten years.
TV station Russia Today reported on Friday (17/5), the census also shows the number of Christians fell 50 percent faster than expected. In fact, from the beginning of statistical analysis showed that only 15 per cent decline. However,
the ONS found that this figure had been strengthened by the birth rates
of Christians Britain abroad, as many as 1.2 million people.
In
addition, this analysis also showed that the majority of Christians are
those who are over 60 years old, and for the first time less than half
of young children in the UK describe themselves as Christian. As a result, the ONS has calculated that in the next decade that Christians would classify themselves as a minority in the UK.
Until
now Christianity is still the dominant religion in the UK with more
than 50 percent of the population identifies themselves as Christian.
However,
the report also shows that the population of Muslims has increased
dramatically over the last 15 years with a rate of 75 percent, both in
England and Wales. In fact, from the population census in 2011 put the UK Muslim population in the range of five percent.
This increase was driven by none other than around 600 thousand Muslim immigrants who arrived in the UK more than a decade ago.
Executive Director of the Office of National Statistics, Keith Porteous Wood, told the newspaper the Telegraph
that the decline of Christians simply can not be avoided anymore. "In the next 20 years there will be more activity than the Muslims go to church."
Additionally, people who identify themselves as atheists has risen by ten percent, from 15 percent rate to 25 percent. British Humanist Association describes this change as a cultural shift was already evident.
While
the Church of England statistics respond confidently and declared that
they still maintain a strong base of imanorang Christians.
"It
is a challenge, the fact that six out of ten people in England and
Wales declared themselves as Christians should not discourage us.
Christianity is no longer a cultural religion, but religion decisions
and commitments. People make a positive choice in expressing themselves
them as Christians, "said the spokesman Catholic Diocese of England and
Wales, in December last year.
In addition, ONS census also showed the increase of followers of Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Judaism.
