Kristen Bauer traveled to a small mosque in a suburb of Jakarta City on
Tuesday to break the Ramadan fast with members of the local community,
the US Embassy here said.
Hosted by the mosque imam and chairman of the mosque council, this BukBer (Breaking of the Fast) included nearly 250 congregants and over 50 orphans who are cared for by the mosque and local residents, the embassy said on its official website on Wednesday.
During remarks, both the Charge (whose Indonesian language skills received enthusiastic applause) and Mosque Council Chairman Abdul Hakim emphasized democracy, religious tolerance, and charity as values shared by the people of the U.S. and Indonesia.
The ritual chanting of Quranic verses - performed by a talented young woman from the mosque community - was followed by prayers and fast-breaking with all of the attendees.
