Megawati encourages women to help eradicate human trafficking

Megawati Soekarnoputri.
Indonesian Democratic Party for Struggle (PDIP) Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri has encouraged Indonesian women to unite in their efforts to eradicate human trafficking.

"If women are more aware and can summon the courage to say `no,` human trafficking will gradually diminish," the former president said during a discussion on the subject of "Women and Indonesian Civilization" on Wednesday.

Soekarnoputri noted that problems involving women could be addressed by women themselves by taking certain steps at home.

"If women continue to refuse saying `no,` human trafficking will only worsen," the fifth president of Indonesia stated.

She encouraged women to also focus their attention on the problems of human and drug trafficking, health, education and corruption.

"I always encourage the women of this country to have knowledge and be educated about their problems," Soekarnoputri said.

She added that many times the act of corruption in bureaucracy was a result of officials` wives pressuring them.

"When I was president, I frequently saw and heard some wives of bureaucrats ask, `What are you going to wear when the president comes?`"

She also encouraged the government to pay attention to women's health by increasing the number of gynecologists and providing a fillip to herbal medicine companies in Indonesia.
