U.S. air safety officials have approved changes to
the battery systems for Boeing's 787 Dreamliner jets, a key step in allowing
carriers to resume flying the aircraft after its grounding three months ago.
Fifty Dreamliners were in use around the world, but
officials grounded them after a battery fire in a parked Japan Airlines 787 in
Boston and another incident in which battery smoke forced an emergency landing
of an All Nippon Airways 787 in Japan.
Investigators have yet to figure out exactly what
caused the battery mishaps, but, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said
Friday it is satisfied with the battery modifications Boeing has adopted.
The safety agency said it will allow the 787
Dreamliners to be flown commercially again after its inspectors approve
installation work on the revamped batteries. Some flights could resume again
within a week.
