Lapan A2, Pioneer Satellite Indonesian Independence

National Aeronautics and Space Institute (LAPAN) has completed the manufacture of satellite Lapan A2. The plan this satellite will be launched into orbit next year, using the Indian rocket from Sriharikota.

This satellite is the successor of the previous success of Space agency satellite, Satellite A1 Tubsat. After orbiting, Lapan A2 will be used for earth observation missions, vessel monitoring, and amateur radio communications.

In addition to having the ability to monitor the Earth's surface through video survailence as in A1 satellite Tubsat, in the A2 version added more sensors, the advanced receiver Automatic Identification System (AIS), an amateur radio payload through Posisition Automatic Reporting System (APRS) and analog video cameras and better digital.

Sensor Automatic Identification System (AIS) is used to detect ships passing through the waters of Indonesia. This technology is even able to detect potential illegal fishing in Indonesian waters. "Each ship is equipped with a transmitter legally, so tracked its position," said Heru Robertus Triharjanto, Head of Bus Technology Satellite, Satellite Center Space agency, Rancabungur, Bogor, yesterday.

While sensor Posisition Automatic Reporting System (APRS) functions provide communication facilities for disaster mitigation assistance through text and voice communications via amateur radio. "For example, disaster, and death communication, the data from these satellites provide an alternative communication aid through amateur radio," he added.

Valued at USD 35 billion satellite will orbit at an altitude of 650 km with a pattern along the equatorial region of Indonesia that as many as 14 times, more often if the satellite orbit polarial. "So it would be optimal to monitor the waters of Indonesia, we also do optimization for more precise control of the satellite," said Head of Satellite Space agency, Suhermanto, on the same occasion.

Pioneers Mandiri
Satellite Lapan A2 is the overall satellite design and operations are conducted in the country. "From the testing, design, operation, all done in the country," said Suhermanto.

This ability is obtained while developing the Satellite Space agency A1-Tubsat, conducted in Berlin, Germany, in 2007. Since the development of A1-Tubsat, Space agency did look serious in satellite development.

Development was then carried out at the Centre for Satellite Technology Space agency, Rancabungur, Bogor, West Java. Not easy to reach this place, because it should be down the narrow streets to get to this place. But from being in the remote location Space agency is preparing satellite to be launched.

Since passing through the gate, the seriousness Space agency already visible in the satellite building. A number of buildings visible equipped with disc (dish) like a big satellite dish. This is one of the facilities on ground earth stations or centers. Space agency itself has five stations, namely in Bogor, Serpong, Biak, Kotatabang, and Pontianak.

According Suhermanto, to support domestic security, satellite development is a serious matter. Space agency because it did not stop at making Lapan A2, but also square off to launch two other satellites, the A3 and A4.

Currently, Lapan A2 still uses components from abroad. But the A3 is targeted for launch in 2014, will use a Space agency targeting supporters who cultivated in the country. "After the transfer of technology, the existing systems in satellites should be in our hands," he said.

Proficiency level of these systems is the reaction wheel, star sensor (a navigational satellite attitude can move the camera), camera, PCDH (Payload Handling Control Data), transmitter, coding and encoding the data transmission.

Head of Technology Satellite Bus, Robert Haru Triharjanto, said satellite A3 will come with loads of earth observation camera with 4 band multispectral scanning camera. This satellite is used to map the land cover classification and environmental monitoring.

The camera resolution of 18 m with a coverage of 120 km and a camera resolution of 6 m with a coverage of 12 km x 12 km. This satellite will also orbit 650 km. "So, can identify the type and age of the plant were censored," he said

If successful launches A3 Satellites, Space agency to immediately resume the construction of a dedicated satellite for operational satellites in 2017 to bring the A4.

This satellite is called will be applied specifically to forestry and fisheries. Specifically for the development of operational satellites, Space agency will hold parties signaled abroad. "We're working together to explore Hokkaido University, Japan," said Suhermanto.
