de Julio Avenue or Avenida 9 de Julio, the local language is the widest
road in the world located in downtown Buenos Aires, Argentina, the
widest highway in the world is not just a regular highway. There are 9 lines wide, with a median park between opposing traffic flow, this is the widest street in the world. Only
those with more speed and long legs will be lucky to get to the other
side before the traffic light at the intersection turned red.
A pedestrian crossing the road usually takes a few extra minutes and 2-3 rotations traffic light turn red. 9 de Julio Avenue is only 1 km long but the width is 110 meters! Road
width unusual because it covers an entire city block, the distance
between two streets in the checkerboard pattern used in Buenos Aires.
The
road runs on the west coast of the Río de la Plata, from the Retiro
district in the north to Constitución station in the south. This road has up to seven lanes in each direction and is flanked on either side by parallel roads of two lanes each.
Flow of traffic on this road far in either direction and connects the unique parts of the metropolis. Several
major landmark Buenos Aires' can be seen along the way, the most
prominent, the Obelisk, which was in the middle of 9 de Julio, the
Embassy of France, the statue of Don Quixote, Teatro Colon, and former
Minister of Communications building - the building on the street itself at a crossroads with Moreno.
Road
was first planned in 1888, with the name Ayohuma, but the construction
of this road has been long opposed by landowners affected by the
eviction, so that delayed the project work done until 1935.
Even
the French government refused to hand over the embassy building to be
demolished, and local preservationists oppose the move as well, because
the building was widely hailed as an architectural masterpiece.
Early stage was inaugurated on July 9, 1937 and the main stretch of road was completed in the 1960s. South connections completed after 1980, when the central part of the city highway system completed condition. Clearing the rights to this intersection has come under fire in the area of the Constitucion.
