President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked PT Freeport Indonesia and
security personnel to investigate accidents that occured in mining
areas. He also expressed his deep condolences on his Twitter account
@SBYudhoyono.
"Every worker is entitled to job protection. Investigate the accident of Freeport," Yudhoyono said on Thursday night.
He asked the concerned parties to intensify rescue efforts. He also
asked all mining companies to increase worker's safety level. According
to Freeport, there are 39 people in the collapsed underground room.
Fifteen workers were evacuated from the location and five of them were
dead.
Police of Papua immediately deployed an investigation team to
investigate the collapse of underground training room of Freeport.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Jero Wacik said the
investigation would be conducted despite Freeport has modern technology.
"I suspected high intensity of rainfall and other natural
disturbances such as vibration could be the cause of accident," Wacik
said on Friday.
Government had also sent three inspectors to the mining site,
followed by Director General of Mineral and Coal at Ministry of Energy
and Mineral Resources, Thamrin Sihite.
