University of Indonesia Student Executive Council reject the fuel price increase and providing direct assistance while


Hundreds of students who are members of the Student Executive Board (BEM), University of Indonesia (UI) held a demonstration in front of the capitol, Jakarta. This is done as a form of protest against the government's plan to raise the price of fuel oil (BBM).

Head of BEM Ali Abdillah said, the argument that the government's fuel price hike for fiscal rescue, it will decrease the purchasing power of the people, especially the poor. Therefore, food price inflation could rise to 11.7 percent.

He continued, rising fuel prices are also predicted to increase the number of poor by 1.6 percent or 4 million people, as reported by the prediction Reforminer Institute: 2012.

"The argument the government to save the state budget that is not broken by reducing fuel subsidies I think quite right. Savings can be made by cutting personnel expenses from year to year which increased sharply. In addition, the BEM UI also criticized the government's measures provide Direct Assistance While Community (BLSM) as a form of compensation for the rise in fuel prices.
