Indonesian Trade
Minister Gita Wirjawan met Chile`s Vice Minister of Trade Alvaro Jana on
Monday to discuss the latter`s interest in exporting food products to
Indonesia and negotiation plans for Indonesia-Chile Comprehensive
Economic Partnership Agreement.
"As long as the products meet our safety food standard and other international regulations, exporting to Indonesia can be arranged," Gita said after the meeting.
The minister explained that Indonesia is now improving national regulation on food import to protect local consumers. Indonesia also has formed some new policies to develop trade facilitation and simplify trading procedures.
Apart from looking into trade, both the ministers also discussed their plans to start negotiating the Indonesia-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
Minister Gita suggested holding a meeting in February next year.
"As long as the APEC and WTO Ministerial Conference lead to satisfying results, Indonesia is ready to start negotiations with Chile. Perhaps both the countries can initially negotiate trade in goods issue," he said.
However, Chile`s Vice Minister Jana said it is highly unlikely for Indonesia and Chile to discuss the economic agreement in February next year as his country will be facing General Election in March and February is a holiday season in Chile.
