Popularity of tablet devices it is high today. In the first quarter of 2013, according to Strategy Analytics firm, the number of tablet devices to reach 40.6 million units shipped.
That amount increased drastically compared to the same quarter in the previous year (year-on-year). At that time, tablet devices sold globally only touched the figure of 18.7 million units.
From these data, it appears the tablet is increasingly attracting the attention of consumers. However, the data does not seem to be considered "sexy" by BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins.
At the Milken Institute conference in Los Angeles, Heins is expressly stated that the tablet is a business model that is not too good. He had been able to predict when the tablet will lose fans.
"In 5 years, I do not think there is a reason to have a tablet anymore," Heins said, as quoted by Bloomberg, on Wednesday (05/01/2013).
"Maybe the device with a large screen at your workplace, but not the kind of tablet. Tablet itself is not a good business model," said Heins.
BlackBerry has actually never had a tablet device. Unfortunately, the product has the name of the PlayBook received less attention in the market. The unavailability of e-mail applications natively is one of the main reasons why this tablet product fails in the market. The product is only sold 150,000 units in the 3rd quarter of 2012.
BlackBerry actually already has plans to launch a new tablet device. In January last, confirms BlackBerry will launch BlackBerry 10 devices based tablet.
"RIM (BlackBerry previous company name) confirmed that the BlackBerry 10, the latest mobile computing platform that will strengthen the next generation of smartphones and tablets, will be featured in an ad during the Super Bowl XLVII," wrote the BlackBerry at the time.
With the declaration of the Heins, whether BlackBerry will launch a new tablet device in the future? Let's just wait.
