The largest mosque in Indonesia and South East Asia, Istiqlal,
prepares iftar for five thousand people in Jakarta. Iftar is the evening
meal when Muslims break their fast during the fasting month of Ramadan.
"The iftar will be given for 30 days, while the food for sahur (pre
dawn meal) will be given in the last 10 days of Ramadan. We provide
sahur for one thousand people per day," Chplain of Istiqlal Mosque, Ali
Mustafa Yaqub said on Sunday.
Budget for sahur and iftar are from individual and institutional
charity. Last year, Embassy of the United Arab Emirates also
participated in Ramadan program.
During the fasting month the mosque also holds regular activities,
such as tarawih (evening prayer during Ramadan only) and qiyamul lail
(pre dawn prayer). Nine grand chaplain of Istiqlal Mosque will lead
tarawih prayers and preaches during the month.
